Arafat and the catholic church: Who stole the door lock?
Since the signing of the principle agreement between Palestine and the holy chair for the Christians in the holy country did something change? And if, which?
(, Jerusalem kreuz.net) also after Jassir Arafats death remain for Christians in the holy country many questions inexplicably. Despite the principle agreement between on Thursday the morning the deceased Palestinian leader Jassir Arafat and the holy chair to the closer co-operation of the Vatikan with the Palestinian autonomous ones areas, are sequentially discriminated against Christians in the holy country.

There are examples unfortunately many. Thousands of hectare country from Christian possession were occupied of Muslim Palestinians, often with the Mitwissen or even the accomplice shank of the responsible Palestinian authorities. In the once flowering Christian areas of Bethlehem, pray Sahour, pray Jala and Gaza are suspended Christians of physical force. Cases of rapes, annoyances and faith lampooning are present. Believer are not only forced to recognize the Islam but also in addition, to kiss the Koran and call themselves as Muslims.

The so-called principle agreement, which was signed on 15 February 2000 of Pope Johannes Paul II. and Jassir Arafat, corresponds to a concordat between the Vatikan and the Palestinian areas. That treatise, which stepped with immediate effect into force, regulates the most important points in the relations between Palestine and the catholic church.

The agreement requires the attention of all acquired rights of the Palestinians on the part of the catholics, the acknowledgment religion and of the liberty of opinion as well as the equality of all citizens independently their religious affiliation. With the signing the Holy See recognized Palestine in fact as own state.

Article 4 of the principle agreement contains the preservation of internationally appreciative holy places, from which many are in the Palestinian areas. It regulates also the respect, which is to be brought to these places. The most important Palestinian holy place is the birth church delighted by emperor Konstantin († 337) in Bethlehem, which became recently scene of heavy arguments between the Palestinians and the Israeli army.

To what extent the principle regulation and particularly article 4 were actually kept from Palestinian side to date and in the future become, the following example shows from the autumn 2002:

At that time Greek-orthodox monks stole the door lock of the birth church and exchanged it against their own lock, so that catholics and the Armenians possessed no more entrance to their most important Heiligtum. Such an incident it would have according to the article 4 to never give might. After negotiations with the stubborn orthodox monks failed, the catholics turned to Arafat, which assigned a commission the problem. But up to today the lock is not at its place.

At the delivery of the key for the birth church into Betlehem it becomes points whether the authorities of the Palestinian autonomous ones are ready areas to convert the letter of the agreement with the holy chair into the practice. For the catholic church clarifying the controversy would be in Betlehem a key experience. It would prove that the met principle agreement is from both sides respected and the catholics in the holy country in a constitutional state to live.
